The Nasinu Town Council is in discussions to manage its own waste collection services, currently handled by the Suva City Council.
This shift will cost the council $4.2 million upfront, with an additional annual cost of $2 million.
Nasinu faces waste management challenges due to its large number of properties and informal settlements, with 20,000 tonnes of waste collected annually.
The council struggles with low revenue from garbage fees, only covering 47% of the collection costs.
Legal action is being taken against non-paying ratepayers, but arrears amount to $11,694,228. Under a user-pay model, households should pay $190 VIP per year, significantly more than the current $78.48 VIP per bin.
