In a historic move, the Democratic Party in the Northern Mariana Islands conducted its inaugural presidential primary, with incumbent US President Joe Biden emerging as the frontrunner by securing 93 out of 99 votes.
Spanning across the islands of Rota, Tinian, and Saipan, voters actively participated in the primary, which took place from March 5th to 12th.
The outcome of this primary holds significance as the 2024 Democratic National Convention is slated to convene in Chicago in August.
During this event, the Democratic Party will officially nominate its candidates for the positions of president and vice president of the United States.
With a total of 11 delegates representing the Northern Mariana Islands at the convention, the delegation includes five automatic delegates comprising party leaders and elected officials.
Additionally, six delegates were elected through the primary process.
Moreover, members of the Northern Marianas’ delegation will play crucial roles in various standing committees at the Convention, further emphasizing the importance of their participation in the democratic process.
