The Fiji Police Force has confirmed that the 18-year-old man featured in a widely circulated video on social media was arrested for drinking liquor in a public place on the night of Monday, June 30, 2025.
According to police, officers were deployed to the scene after receiving a report of the young man allegedly consuming alcohol in public. Upon arrival, officers attempted to arrest the suspect, who reportedly refused to cooperate and resisted arrest.
As a result of the altercation, the suspect sustained injuries and was transported to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital for medical treatment. He has since been discharged.
Totogo Police say they are awaiting the suspect’s full medical report before proceeding with further questioning as part of the ongoing investigation.
Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu acknowledged public concern over the officers’ conduct during the arrest, adding that the matter will be looked into.
“I want to assure the public that the conduct of our officers will be addressed accordingly. At the same time, we urge members of the public to cooperate with police when approached or asked to comply with the law,” Commissioner Tudravu said.
He reiterated that the public has been warned multiple times about the illegality of drinking in public spaces, and emphasized that such behaviour poses safety and security risks to others.
“Enforcement actions will be taken where necessary. Our aim is to uphold the law while restoring public trust and confidence in the police force through professional service,” he added.
The Commissioner encouraged members of the public to report any concerns or incidents involving police conduct to the nearest police station or community post. He further assured that disciplinary action would be taken against any officers found to have abused their authority.
