House break-in incidents are happening nearly every day, raising concerns among residents about the safety of their homes and families.

Police say they are taking these concerns seriously, with more targeted operations planned to ensure officers are proactive rather than reactive.

Responding to questions from Fiji One News, Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Kasiano Vusonilawe, stated that police will strengthen their operational strategies as the country enters a busy period with school holidays and major events.

The Commissioner of Police is currently reviewing the force’s concept of operations to ensure police strategies respond to changing crime patterns.

With Fiji Police Force also analysing the recent incidents and looking at ways to strengthen their response.

Minister for Policing, Ioane Naivalurua highlighted that more attention will now be placed on housebreak-in, with police working to ensure their operations are better targeted to the areas and crimes of concern.

“I take note of some concerns on how it is perceived as an increase in housebreaking and some of those incidents are becoming regular and I take note of that” Naivalurua highlighted.

“The Commissioner of Police is already on to that, is now analysing and reviewing some of the concept of operations in how we can readjust this concept of operation to suit the changing times” he added.

Police are also looking at how communities can assist investigations, with CCTV cameras becoming an important source of evidence in residential break-ins.

Naivalurua added that CCTV footage from homes can provide police with valuable evidence and help establish what happened during a housebreaking.

“More and more homes are putting up CCTV cameras, and that is very useful for us in terms of evidence of what happened” he said.
