The post-mortem examination of the late Sakiasi Ose Radravu was conducted yesterday, with immediate family members present to formally identify the deceased prior to the examination.
In a statement, Police say family members were briefed on the findings immediately after the post-mortem, which determined that Mr Radravu’s death was linked to a pre-existing medical condition.
Investigations have confirmed through records at Valelevu Police Station that Mr Radravu was taken in for questioning on the night of the 23rd of April this year, in relation to an alleged burglary case. He was detained for questioning and later released.
Police also confirmed that, according to family members, no official report alleging assault was lodged following Mr Radravu’s arrest.
To ensure transparency, the case file, together with the post-mortem findings and recommendations, will be submitted to the Resident Magistrate for consideration of a possible inquest.
Meanwhile, the Fiji Police Force says it will continue its internal investigation into the conduct of the 12 police officers involved in the raid, including allegations of non-compliance with established procedures during the burglary investigation.
A directive has been issued to investigate the actions of officers involved in Mr Radravu’s arrest and detention, as well as concerns over inadequate supervisory oversight.
The Fiji Police Force acknowledged that failures to comply with due process continue to contribute to complaints against the organisation and undermine public confidence in its services.
As a result, the Internal Affairs Unit has been instructed to strengthen oversight mechanisms and ensure middle managers strictly adhere to established procedures. Police say disciplinary action will be taken against officers who fail to meet these requirements.
