Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, accompanied by Fiji’s Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China, His Excellency Robert Lee, is on a two-day visit to the Northern Division to review the proposed road upgrades under the Vanua Levu Road Upgrade Project.
This initiative is funded through a grant from the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA) under the Peopleโs Republic of Chinaโs Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
The Vanua Levu Road Upgrade Project, with an estimated budget of FJD $300 million, is set to be a cornerstone initiative of Chinaโs Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) in Fiji.
Prime Minister Rabuka highlighted the importance of incorporating local input into the project to ensure that the roadworks not only enhance connectivity but also generate local employment opportunities during the construction phase.

The Fiji Roads Manager North Mr Delana Rabalaka was also part of the tour, providing further insights into the technical and logistical aspects of the project.
The delegation also attended a briefing led by Provincial Administrator Savusavu, Mr. Jovesa Naqarikau, at the Provincial Administratorโs Office in Savusavu.
The briefing outlined the region’s economic potential, which is expected to benefit greatly from the improved road infrastructure.
Ambassador Lee expressed his satisfaction with the project, emphasizing its role in strengthening infrastructure and promoting regional growth.
He further added that the upgraded roads are expected to boost key sectors such as tourism and renewable energy projects, including hydro-power, while enhancing access and connectivity for rural communities.
