Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has launched three key initiatives aimed at strengthening the future of rugby in Fiji and enhancing its contribution to national development.
The initiatives include the Fiji Rakavi Foundation, a new partnership between the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) and Australia Pacific Management Training (APMT), and the Fiji Rugby Management System.
Speaking at the launch event, Prime Minister Rabuka described the programmes as important milestones that will reinforce the foundations of Fiji rugby while creating opportunities beyond the sport itself.
He said the Fiji Rakavi Foundation reflects a national commitment to nurturing rugby through greater inclusion, opportunity and excellence for future generations.
The Prime Minister noted that rugby has been deeply embedded in Fiji’s identity since its introduction in the late nineteenth century and has played a significant role in shaping communities across the country.
Rabuka paid tribute to generations of players who have represented Fiji internationally, acknowledging the dedication and sacrifices made by athletes and their families in bringing recognition to the nation.
Drawing from his own experience as a former national representative, he reflected on past teammates and rugby legends whose contributions helped build Fiji’s proud rugby legacy.
He emphasised that rugby extends beyond competition, serving as a platform for character building, discipline and national unity. According to the Prime Minister, the sport continues to play a vital role in youth development, community engagement, economic empowerment and nation-building.
Rabuka said the Fiji Rakavi Foundation will help address long-standing player welfare needs through support services such as medical assistance, rehabilitation, physiotherapy, career transition guidance and personal development programmes.
He stressed that supporting players should not end when their careers conclude, adding that the strength of Fiji rugby is also measured by the care and support provided to those who represent the nation.
The Prime Minister also welcomed the expanded collaboration between FRU and APMT, describing it as an investment in developing Fiji’s future workforce.
Meanwhile, the Fiji Rugby Management System was hailed as a major step toward modernising the administration and management of rugby across the country.
Rabuka concluded by commending the FRU Board and management for their leadership in advancing the sport and maintaining Fiji’s reputation on the international rugby stage.
He also called for continued efforts to honour the achievements of Fiji’s rugby pioneers while supporting the next generation of talented play
