Three weeks after the grounding incident and following two weeks of salvage operations, focused on minimising environmental impacts and preventing further damage – the ‘RFNS Puamau’ was successfully recovered from the reef at Fulaga, by a salvage tug, with support from the ‘RFNS Savenaca’.

The Republic of Fiji Navy, in observance of traditional protocols at Fulaga and with the consent of the Vanua of Ogea, – is pleased to announce that the ‘RFNF Puamau’ has been towed to the safe waters off Ogea Island, where a thorough ‘damage assessment’ will be conducted, prior to the next phase.

The Fiji Navy acknowledges the tireless dedication of the salvage teams, including contracted subject-matter experts locally and abroad, the RFNS Savenaca ships’ company, the Navy divers and Navy engineers who worked under challenging circumstances, as well as the continued support of partners and stakeholders, who contributed to a safe recovery operation.

The “Board of Inquiry” continues with their deliberations on the grounding incident, to ascertain the facts surrounding the incident, and make recommendations from their findings.

Meanwhile – an Australian Defence spokesperson has stated that the ‘RFNS Puamau’, being a sovereign asset of Fiji and the Government of Fiji, is leading the response to the vessel’s grounding.

They say the Government of Fiji has formally requested Australian assistance with the immediate response and defence, alongside specialist contractors – who are providing technical support and guidance to the Government of Fiji, at Fiji’s request.
