Shangri-La Yanuca Island, Fiji has reinforced its commitment to environmental education and sustainability by commemorating World Oceans Day, World Environment Day and International Food Safety Day with participants of the Heritage in Young Hands (HIYH) programme.
The event combined environmental awareness, sustainability education and community engagement, highlighting the importance of protecting Fiji’s natural resources and empowering young people to become future environmental stewards.
The Heritage in Young Hands programme is an environmental education initiative that provides primary school students with hands-on learning experiences focused on conservation, sustainability and responsible citizenship.
The programme aims to help children develop a deeper understanding of their natural and cultural heritage while encouraging them to take an active role in protecting it.
Shangri-La Yanuca Island has been a key partner of the programme since its inception in 2016, when it was established through a collaboration between the National Trust of Fiji and the resort, then known as Shangri-La’s Fijian Resort & Spa.
Over the past decade, the resort has continued to support the programme’s growth and long-term success, reinforcing its commitment to sustainability and community development.
As part of the celebrations, students also participated in an educational session on food safety led by the resort’s Hygiene Assistant, Mariana Ligawalawala.
She shared practical guidance on hygiene and safe food handling practices, helping students understand their role in preventing foodborne illnesses and maintaining healthy communities.
Shangri-La Yanuca Island’s Assistant Manager for Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG), Bulou Kurisalili, said environmental stewardship is a shared responsibility and education remains essential in creating lasting change.
“We are proud to continue supporting Heritage in Young Hands and to provide opportunities for young people to develop a deeper appreciation for the environment while gaining the knowledge and confidence to make a positive impact in their communities,” Ms Kurisalili said.
The event served as a reminder of the importance of collective action in addressing environmental challenges and the need to equip younger generations with the knowledge and skills required to protect Fiji’s natural and cultural heritage.
Through its continued partnership with Heritage in Young Hands, Shangri-La Yanuca Island, Fiji says it remains committed to responsible tourism, environmental conservation and community empowerment, helping preserve Fiji’s unique environment for future generations.
