As of May 5, 2025, Microsoft has officially retired Skype, marking the end of an era for one of the world’s most iconic communication platforms. The change affects both free and paid Skype users, although it does not apply to Skype for Business, which remains active for enterprise users under certain licensing agreements.
Microsoft recommends users transition to Microsoft Teams (Free), which offers familiar features such as messaging, video calling, screen sharing, and file sharing-alongside more advanced collaborative tools for both personal and small team use.
While the shutdown may feel like a significant shift for longtime Skype users, Microsoft Teams Free aims to provide a smoother, more modern communication experience built with today’s digital needs in mind.
