More than 200 residents of Taviya Village in Levuka, Ovalau, now have safer access around their community at night following the commissioning of a new solar lighting project.

The Taviya Village Solar Lighting Project will benefit 54 households and was funded at more than $20,000 through the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management’s Self-Help Programme.

The project was commissioned by Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management Mosese Bulitavu.

Bulitavu says while access to reliable lighting may appear to be a simple development initiative, it can have a significant impact on the daily lives of people in rural communities.

The solar lights have been installed to improve safety, security and accessibility, particularly along village roads and pathways after dark.

The project is also expected to reduce the risk of accidents and falls at night, particularly for children and the elderly.

Improved lighting will allow villagers to more safely access schools, health services and communal facilities in the evening, while also supporting community activities after dark.

The use of solar technology also provides a sustainable and cost-effective lighting solution for rural and maritime communities.

Bulitavu thanked the people of Taviya Village for their cooperation and support in implementing the project.

The Government says the initiative is part of ongoing efforts to improve basic services and infrastructure in rural and maritime communities across Fiji.
