Students have been encouraged to stay focused on their goals and resist pressure from peers amid growing concerns over drug abuse and rising HIV infections in Fiji.
Speaking during an HIV awareness event at Delainamasi Government School in Nasinu this week, Assistant Minister for Health and Medical Services Penioni Ravunawa commended students for wearing red in support of the campaign and promoting awareness among young people.
He told students that their involvement reflected a commitment to combating stigma, discrimination, substance abuse and the spread of HIV, while stressing the importance of making responsible life choices.
Ravunawa urged students not to be influenced by others into experimenting with drugs, warning that substance use is often falsely portrayed as harmless or a way to gain acceptance.
He highlighted the growing challenges posed by illicit drug use and HIV/AIDS, noting that the two issues are closely connected. Fiji recorded 2,016 new HIV cases in 2025, representing a 27 per cent increase compared to the previous year. Many of those diagnosed were between the ages of 15 and 34.
The Assistant Minister also revealed that 117 HIV-related deaths were recorded during the year, including children. He said research continues to show a strong link between unsafe injecting drug use and the rapid increase in HIV infections.
Ravunawa cautioned that young people who experiment with drugs risk more than addiction, as they may also expose themselves to serious diseases that can have lasting impacts on their health, education, family life and future aspirations.
