A 40-year-old man charged with attempted murder after allegedly driving through a police checkpoint and seriously injuring a police officer has been granted bail by the High Court in Suva.

Domoniko Tabao appeared before Suva High Court Justice Dane Tuiqereqere, who granted bail under strict bail conditions.

Tabao is accused of driving through a police roadblock at Laqere and striking a police officer who was on duty at the checkpoint.

The police officer is Minister for Defence Pio Tikoduadua’s daughter, who is still admitted at the hospital since the incident.

As part of his bail conditions, Tabao must reside with his sister at Narere, report to the Nasinu Police Station every Saturday between 6am and 6pm, and surrender all travel documents.

He is also prohibited from applying for any travel documents without the court’s permission, interfering with State witnesses, committing any further arrestable offences, and must attend all court appearances.

A stop departure order is also to be issued.

He is released on a non-cash bail bond of $1000 for the two sureties.

In its submissions, the State noted that while the attempted murder charge is serious and indictable in nature, strict bail conditions could be imposed to mitigate any risk to the public while the matter proceeds through the courts.

The matter has been adjourned to the 12th of this month for plea.
