Hours spent waiting under the sun or rain are adding to the challenges faced by taxi operators during meter recalibration.
Taxi operators are required to have their meters recalibrated when fares change, but the process can leave drivers waiting for long periods with limited shelter and basic facilities.
The Fiji Zone Taxi Association have highlighted that female taxi drivers are particularly affected and want a proper venue where the process can be done safely and comfortably.
The Fiji Zone Taxi Association Spokesperson, Mohammed Shameem, said female operators are facing difficult conditions while waiting for their meters to be recalibrated.
“We have female taxi operators with no water, no washroom and no sitting arrangements it should be taken under the shade in a proper manner to get their meters calibrated” Shameem said.
Shameem added that the current process is also adding to the time and costs faced by operators who need to keep their vehicles on the road.
“So, this calibration system will take away the money from taxi operators. That is taking time and that is also taking the money from the taxi operators” he added.
Government acknowledges the concerns, with Assistant Minister for Transportation Naisa Tuinaceva saying the issue will be discussed with the Land Transport Authority.
“Yes, we will look into that, and we’ll talk to the Land Transport Authority and see if the system of calibration can be friendly to our drivers” Tuinaceva said.
Taxi operators now want a proper venue with shelter and basic facilities, making the recalibration process safer, more comfortable and less disruptive to their work.
