Telecom Fiji and Google have entered a landmark agreement to develop a high-capacity terrestrial fiber optic link connecting FINTEL’s international cable landing station in Vatuwaqa to Google’s ICT facility in Natadola.

Announced in Natadola on June 9, the project forms part of the Pacific Connect initiative, designed to enhance Fiji’s digital infrastructure, boost connectivity resilience, and support regional scalability.

The fiber link will run along the Queens Highway, ensuring seamless, high-speed data transmission between the two critical landing sites of the Bulikula and Tabua subsea cable systems. This connection is expected to improve local and regional internet speed, stability, and security.

Telecom Fiji will oversee the full design, construction, and long-term maintenance of the link to international performance and security standards.

Telecom Fiji CEO Charles Goundar said the project reinforces the company’s commitment to developing world-class digital infrastructure in the Pacific.

“This agreement showcases Telecom Fiji’s technical strength and our capacity to deliver a globally benchmarked fiber network for Fiji and the region,” Mr. Goundar said.

Brian Quigley, Vice President for Global Network Infrastructure at Google Cloud, highlighted that the project will support Fiji’s digital growth and bridge the Pacific’s digital divide.

“Fiji is now positioned as a key connectivity hub for the Pacific,” Mr. Quigley stated. “This fiber route will improve reliability and help drive the region’s digital transformation.”

The partnership underlines the shared vision of both companies to enable a secure, resilient, and digitally empowered Pacific.
