Minister for Defence Pio Tikoduadua is urging Fijians to unite and take collective responsibility for the nation’s future as the country prepares to celebrate 56 years of independence.

Speaking at a press conference on the launch of Fiji Day Week celebrations, Tikoduadua says this year’s commemoration comes at a significant time for Fiji, with the country facing major challenges, including rising drug-related concerns, HIV and constitutional changes.

He adds the celebrations should go beyond reflecting on the country’s history and provide an opportunity for Fijians to reaffirm their shared identity and commitment to building a safer and stronger nation.

Tikoduadua says recent legislative developments, including laws aimed at strengthening police and law enforcement powers, were intended to address emerging threats and protect families and communities.

He stressed that national unity was particularly important as Fiji approaches the next general election, expected early next year.

“Independence days are intended to bring us together, and coming together is a great challenge ahead of us as a country, as a people, to fight together,” he said.

This year’s Fiji Day Week will feature community activities, market stalls, public engagements, clean-up initiatives and a history day at the Fiji Museum.

The celebrations will culminate in a military parade on Saturday, marking the 56th anniversary of Fiji’s independence.

The Minster encouraged Fijians to participate in the week-long activities, celebrate responsibly and reflect on what independence means to them.

He adds building a better Fiji remained a shared responsibility, with every citizen playing a role in shaping the nation’s future.
