Susie Wolff is the director of F1’s academy for aspiring female racing drivers, while husband Toto Wolff is the team principal and co-owner of Mercedes F1 and the director of Mercedes motorsport
Toto Wolff, the Mercedes team principal, has publicly voiced his support for his wife Susie Wolff, who has initiated legal action against the FIA (Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile) following a conflict of interest inquiry conducted by the motorsport’s governing body.
Susie Wolff, who serves as the F1 Academy series director, launched the legal proceedings after the FIA’s inquiry into her conduct last year was abruptly concluded just two days after its initiation in December.
In his statement, Toto Wolff emphasized Susie’s resolve and integrity, stating, “Susie is a strong woman and she doesn’t take anything from anyone.”
He underscored her commitment to her convictions and values, asserting that she “feels wrong was done and the court needs to hear that.”
The legal dispute stems from an inquiry prompted by claims made in Business F1 magazine regarding concerns raised by rival team principals about a potential conflict of interest arising from Susie Wolff’s relationship with her husband, Toto Wolff, who holds a prominent position within Mercedes.
The article alleged that the close ties between the Wolffs could lead to the exchange of confidential information between Mercedes and Formula 1, thereby compromising the integrity of the sport. Both Mercedes and Formula 1 denied these allegations.
Susie Wolff, who oversees F1’s junior category for aspiring female drivers, reports directly to F1 president Stefano Domenicali.
She publicly denounced the allegations as “intimidatory and misogynistic” and expressed her dismay at the perceived attack on her integrity.
While the FIA swiftly concluded its investigation, stating its satisfaction with the existing measures in place to prevent such conflicts, Susie Wolff remains steadfast in her pursuit of accountability and transparency.
Toto Wolff stressed the importance of a thorough investigation into the matter, not only for Susie but also for the integrity of the sport as a whole. He emphasized the need for accountability and transparency in all areas of the sport.
Susie Wolff’s legal action comes amid heightened scrutiny of ethical issues within Formula 1, including recent investigations involving key figures such as Mohammed Ben Sulayem, Christian Horner, and allegations of inappropriate behavior within Red Bull Racing.
