Tribunal to investigate allegations against Chief Justice Kamal Kumar named

Members of the Tribunal to investigate allegations of misbehavior against Chief Justice Kamal Kumar were sworn in at the State House yesterday.

The members are as follows: 

1. His Lordship the right honourable Justice David E. Ashton Lewis,
2. Justice Jiten Singh,
3. Justice Filimone Jitoko
4. Justice William Desmond Calanchini


The members of the tribunal took the Oath of Allegiance followed by the Oath of due Execution of Judicial office in the presence of His Excellency, the President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere.

Justice David E. Ashton Lewis served as Justice of the High Court and Court of Appeal of Fiji from 1991 to 1996.

Hon. Lewis is currently facilitating consultancy work with the Judicial and Constitutional Parliamentary Government in Queensland Australia from 2010 till to date.

His areas of expertise range from Equity and Commercial Law Resources and Environmental Law Indigenous and Pacific Islander Law Criminal Law, Constitutional Law, Common Law, Administrative Law.

Justice Jiten Singh graduated with a Bachelors of Law at the University of Auckland in 1971.

He served as a Resident Magistrate from December 1997 to May 2002 from Nausori to Suva. 

His professional qualifications also include Barrister and Solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand Barrister, Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Australian Capital Territory Barrister and Solicitor of the High Court of Fiji.

Justice Jitoko served as Chief Justice at the Nauru Supreme Court from July 2017 till September 2020. He also served as Registrar at the Nauru Supreme Court from October 2015 till June 2017.

Justice Jitoko served as Puisne Judge, High Court of Fiji, February 2002-April 2009. He also served as a Chief Registrar with the Supreme Court of Fiji from October 1985 till 1987.

Justice William Desmond Calanchini graduated with Bachelors in Law from University of Melbourne in 1972 and was admitted to practice as a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Victoria on 1 April 1974 and as a legal practitioner in Fiji on 29 March 1999.

From 1998 – 2002, Justice Calanchini was appointed Deputy Solicitor-General in Fiji providing legal advice to Government Departments and ministries on more complex issues as discussed.
