In a bid to bridge the digital divide and ensure universal access to education, the Global Initiative for School Connectivity, known as GIGA, is making significant strides in Fiji.

Collaboratively led by UNICEF, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), and the Ministry of Education, GIGA aims to connect all schools worldwide to the internet by 2030.

As part of this initiative, a dedicated team recently concluded a comprehensive training workshop for primary and secondary school teachers in the Nausori cluster of schools.

Traveling to the highlands of Naitasiri and rural areas including Navurevure Primary School in Waidina, the team engaged with educators to address challenges related to connectivity, power access, and transportation.

Schools in these remote locations face unique obstacles due to their geographical isolation and the absence of essential infrastructure such as cell towers. Without reliable internet access, educators struggle to leverage digital resources for teaching and learning, limiting educational opportunities for students.

During the workshops, teachers shared their experiences and discussed strategies to overcome these challenges.

The sessions focused on utilizing technology effectively in the classroom, integrating e-learning resources into lesson plans, and adapting teaching methods to enhance student engagement and learning outcomes.

Despite the obstacles, the enthusiasm and dedication of educators in these remote communities were palpable.

Their commitment to providing quality education to every child, regardless of geographical barriers, underscored the importance of initiatives like GIGA in unlocking the potential of education as a catalyst for development and empowerment.

Looking ahead, the GIGA team will continue its training efforts, extending support to schools in the Ra Education District Cluster.

By empowering teachers with the skills and resources needed to navigate the digital landscape, GIGA aims to create a more inclusive and equitable education system in Fiji and beyond.

Through collaborative efforts and innovative solutions, GIGA is paving the way for a future where every child has the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive in a connected world.
