Over 500 mangrove seedlings were planted along the coastline of Waicoka, Bau, in Tailevu to mark World Environment Day.

The initiative, organised by Homes of Hope, brought together volunteers, youth groups, and key partners from the iTaukei Women in Conservation, the Agricultural Department of Fiji National University, and the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change.

Waicoka, like many vulnerable coastal communities across Fiji, faces the harsh impacts of climate change daily.

Rising sea levels, coastal erosion, and unpredictable weather patterns threaten both the environment and the livelihoods of local residents.

This year’s World Environment Day theme-“Restoration, Resilience, and Climate Action”-was brought to life through the mangrove planting initiative.

The initiative also highlighted the central role of women and youth in climate action. Stakeholders, particularly from iTaukei Women in Conservation, were recognized for their leadership and unwavering dedication.
