Raina Ram, a Fijian student studying Forensic Science in Gujarat, India, credits her educational journey to receiving the Westpac Women and Girls Education Grant in 2015.

After finding out about the programme through a newspaper article, Ms Ram was encouraged by her mother to apply.

She wrote an essay on animal cruelty which stood out, leading to her being selected amongst 30 recipients.

“The grant opportunity stood out immediately to me and my first reaction, following the news that I had won, was immense joy and gratitude. Receiving the grant also made my family very proud, especially my mum, who supported me throughout the process,” said Ms Ram.

The grant provided financial support for her studies, enabling her to pursue higher education in India after graduating from Secondary School in Fiji.

Ms Ram, now in her final semester, reflects on her growth in resilience and independence through studying abroad.

She encourages women and girls in Fiji to seize opportunities like grants, as such initiatives can be transformative.

“Consider applying for grants and embrace the opportunity with courage and confidence. Taking a chance on such opportunities can be life-changing because it’s now or never and if you keep holding yourself back. It’s natural to feel apprehensive but remember every great achievement begins with the decision to try. This grant can provide valuable support and open doors to new possibilities. Believe in your potential, face challenges head-on, and don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. Your dreams are worth pursuing and this grant could be the first step towards realising them”.

Applications for the 2024 Westpac Women and Girls Education Grant close on 31 July. For more details, visit www.westpac.com.fj.
