For the first time, women from the villages of Nuku, Cakova, Keteira, and Maloku gathered at Naroi, Moala, for a Women’s mini-craft show dedicated to showcasing their handmade products and fostering empowerment.
Organized by the Ministry of Women, Children, and Social Protection, the event provided a valuable platform for women to exchange ideas, learn new skills, and promote their creativity and entrepreneurship.
In addition to sulu and Jamba, shirts participants displayed fine mats, and handmade crafts, and sold fresh vegetables and root crops. The event not only celebrated traditional Fijian artistry but also highlighted the diverse talents and resourcefulness of the women in the maritime islands.
Officiating at the event, the Principal of Yasayasa Moala College, Draunidalo, expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the women and emphasized their vital role in society. “Women are the backbone of our communities, and their contributions extend beyond their homes. Events like these empower them economically and socially, encouraging self-reliance and innovation,” he said.
Kalo Leba, President of the Maloku Women’s Group, shared her appreciation for the initiative.
“Today, we woke up early, prepared our families, and then made our way to Naroi to showcase our handicrafts. For the women of Maloku, we are selling sulu, Jamba, and honey products from our women’s group project,” she said.
Unise Vosataki of Vadra emphasised the importance of such events for women in remote areas.
“Some of us can’t afford to travel to Suva during the Women’s National Expo, but today we are grateful to the government for an opportunity to sell our handicrafts,” she shared. She added that the platform allows women to develop entrepreneurial skills and strengthen their networks.
The event, the first of its kind in Naroi, underscored the Ministry’s commitment to empowering women in rural and maritime communities. By creating opportunities for women to showcase their talents and earn an income, the government aims to promote gender equality and support sustainable community development.
