As many households continue to face rising living expenses, a young farmer from Ba is demonstrating how dedication and smart use of available land can create a stable livelihood.

Twenty-nine-year-old Meli Taivei of Nakavika Settlement has been growing vegetables since 2018, turning less than an acre of land into a productive farming venture.

Through careful crop management and consistent effort, he cultivates produce including long beans, chillies, tomatoes and watermelons, supplying markets in Sigatoka and Nadi.

His hard work has generated encouraging returns, with watermelon sales alone bringing in more than $2,000. Other crops, including okra and kumala, have also contributed to a steady income stream.

Mr Taivei credits his achievements to self-discipline, staying away from negative influences and maintaining a strong faith-based approach to life.

Alongside his wife, who works as a teacher, he provides for their two young sons as well as his parents.

Although Cyclone Vaianu caused significant crop losses, he remains focused on growing his farming business and hopes to invest in a rotovator to improve productivity.

He believes agriculture offers real opportunities for young people and encourages others to make the most of the land they have available.

“Even if you have a small piece of land, make use of it,” he said. “There is good money in farming, and I love what I am doing.”
