The overall crime rate for the month of October recorded a 2% reduction, reflecting a steady decline in overall crime of 10% for the period from January to October 2023.

However, crimes against women remains a concern with a 0.5% increase recorded for the month of October compared to the same period last year. Domestic-related cases against women made up 27% of the 213 cases, which were mostly committed by a spouse/partner.

Of the 213 women victims, 156 were aged between 18-38 years, 51 aged between 39-59 years while 6 victims were over the age of 60.

Fifteen percent (15%) of the offences reported were sexual offences while 85% were assault related offences.

The Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew says recent issues highlighted by the media of police’s inaction or failure to properly handle domestic violence cases, is being addressed to ensure women victims do not feel further victimized by the laxity of police.

The Acting Commissioner has reminded Police officers of the, “No Drop Policy” as well as the internal directive of resolving Domestic Violence Cases within 48 hours, adding Police should not be hindering efforts in addressing domestic violence, and do their part by effectively executing their duties.

Burglary, aggravated robbery, robbery, rape and theft of motor vehicle cases recorded increases in the Western Division compared to the same period last year.

In the Southern Division, robbery, attempted burglary and rape reported increases. The Northern Division recorded increases in aggravated burglary and robbery, whereas in the Central Division, robbery, arson and attempted robbery recorded increases for the month of October when compared to the same period last year.

With school holidays nearing, community policing visitations to schools is being heightened with police officers conducting safety awareness to students.

While Crimes against Children recorded a decrease of 24%, it is still worrying to note that 12% of the 121 crimes committed against children were committed in a domestic setting by family members.

On the war on drugs, the increased momentum of operations in targeting the cultivators, manufacturers and distributors of green and white drugs has resulted in the 57% increase in drug cases recorded during the month of October.

All five policing divisions recorded increases, whereby approximately 2% (3 cases) were related to methamphetamine and the remaining 157 cases were related to the unlawful possession of marijuana.

The Acting Commissioner says Police will be focusing on improving collaboration through community policing, as crime prevention and addressing serious crimes requires community partnerships.

He has also reminded Police officers of the need to maintain professionalism whilst executing their duties.
