The anticipation is intense as the Suva men’s and women’s volleyball teams eagerly prepare for the first-ever Fiji Volleyball Federation sanctioned tournament scheduled tomorrow at the FMF gym.
Headed by experienced coaches Apenisa Saukuru and Josaia Rasiga, both teams have undergone rigorous training in the past few weeks to showcase their skills on the court.
Apenisa Saukuru, the Head Coach and Fijian’s sole internationally accredited FIVB Beach Volleyball Referee, brings a wealth of experience as a former Suva player and a representative for Fiji in both beach volleyball and indoor competitions at the Pacific Games.
His dual role as a coach and referee adds a unique perspective to the teams’ preparation, emphasizing the importance of mentorship and skill development.
Vice President, Semaima Lagilagi says the rarity of former players like Saukuru giving back to the sport through coaching and mentoring is acknowledged, making his involvement even more valuable.
Joji Katia and Waisake Rabuatoka have been nominated to lead the Suva men’s team, with Katia assuming the captaincy role due to his extensive experience and exceptional leadership skills.
Having participated in the Pacific Games last year, Katia’s seasoned background will undoubtedly inspire the team.
In the women’s category, Vunisei Mateiwai and Diana Waqavakatoga have been appointed as captains for the Suva Women’s Blue team.
With their regional and international experiences, the team boasts a well-rounded mix of players, creating an optimistic outlook for the championship.
The Suva mens and womens are the defending champions of the HBK Vulaca Championship 2023.
