The Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Dr. Raijeli Taga, today received a courtesy call from the German Ambassador to Fiji, Dr. Andreas Prothmann, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs headquarters in Suva.
This introductory meeting highlighted the growing diplomatic and collaborative ties between Fiji and Germany since the opening of the German Embassy in Suva in 2023.
Dr. Taga reaffirmed Fiji’s commitment to further enhancing cooperation with Germany, particularly in key areas such as climate change, energy, defense and security, trade, and UN peacekeeping.
She emphasized the importance of deepening both bilateral and multilateral engagements.
In response, Ambassador Prothmann congratulated Dr. Taga on her new role and expressed gratitude for the ongoing collaboration between the two nations.
He also lauded Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s active participation at the Munich Security Conference, which included meaningful discussions with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
These discussions focused on strengthening the partnership between Fiji and Germany.
Looking ahead, Ambassador Prothmann expressed optimism about future developments, particularly with the Berlin Energy Transition Dialogue conference next month, where Fiji’s Permanent Secretary for Climate Change Dr. Sivendra Michael will participate.
He also mentioned the President of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD)’s expected visit in May, which will foster closer ties in university exchanges and scientific cooperation.
In March, an inspection team from the German Federal Foreign Office will visit the German Embassy in Fiji, with plans to set up a meeting between Dr. Taga and Inspector Ambassador Bernd Finke to explore further opportunities for diplomatic and educational exchanges.
