In a powerful display of regional solidarity and military cooperation, 129 Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) personnel joined their Australian Defence Force (ADF) counterparts in a joint training initiative under the Vuvale Partnership at Shoalwater Bay Training Area in Central Queensland.
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, accompanied by senior government and military officials, visited the training site today, commending the spirit of comradeship and professionalism demonstrated by the Fijian contingent.
“This training goes beyond tactical drills; it is a symbol of our unity, loyalty, and shared commitment to the security and stability of our region,” said the Prime Minister. “The Vuvale Partnership is not just words; it is being lived and strengthened through moments like these.”
The RFMF troops are participating in the five-month-long Exercise Talisman Sabre 2025, the largest combined military training activity conducted by the ADF. This year’s exercise involves more than 30,000 military personnel from 19 nations, including the United States, New Zealand, Japan, France, India, Indonesia, and other Pacific allies.
Fiji’s involvement in the rotational company pilot – the first of its kind with any Pacific defence force – reflects the growing depth of bilateral relations between Fiji and Australia. The initiative aims to increase interoperability, share tactical expertise, and strengthen regional defence cooperation.
As part of the visit, Prime Minister Rabuka and his delegation observed a live demonstration of offensive training tactics, underscoring the capabilities and preparedness of the RFMF in coalition operations.
“This rotational company pilot is a testament to the strength of our Vuvale Partnership. It offers our personnel the opportunity to train, deploy, and operate alongside one another with trust and shared purpose,” said the Prime Minister.
The delegation included Minister for Defence and Veterans Affairs Hon. Pio Tikoduadua, Minister for Policing Hon. Ioane Naivalurua, Minister for Immigration Hon. Viliame Naupoto, Permanent Secretary to the Prime Minister’s Office Dr. Lesi Korovavala, Permanent Secretary for Civil Service and Public Enterprises Mr. Amena Yauvoli, and RFMF Deputy Commander Commodore Humphrey Tawake.
Fiji’s presence at Talisman Sabre 2025 reinforces its role as a key security partner in the Indo-Pacific and a strong advocate for collective regional preparedness and resilience.
