Yesterday marked a historic milestone in Fiji–Timor-Leste defence relations as the Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF), Major General Jone Kalouniwai, joined celebrations for the 50th anniversary of the Armed Forces for the National Liberation of East Timor (FALINTIL).
The commemorations featured an International Conference with senior military officers, government ministers, and academics reflecting on FALINTIL’s historic role in the resistance movement and its future defence strategy.
Commander Kalouniwai paid an official call on Timor-Leste’s Chief of Defence Force, Lieutenant-General Domingos Raul “Falur Rate Laek,” where he was accorded a Guard of Honor before holding discussions on strengthening bilateral defence cooperation.
The main parade, presided over by the President of Timor-Leste, showcased the professionalism and discipline of FALINTIL while symbolising national pride, sacrifice, and resilience.
Communities across Timor-Leste also participated in a symbolic march-past, highlighting the unity that sustained their independence struggle.
Commander Kalouniwai’s participation underscored Fiji’s solidarity with Timor-Leste, reaffirming the two nations shared history of cooperation through peacekeeping and their commitment to regional peace, stability, and collaboration in the Indo-Pacific.
