The Electoral Commission (EC) has confirmed that the number of seats in Parliament will remain at 55 for Fiji’s next General Election.

The decision was approved at the Commission’s meeting on 11 December 2025, in the exercise of its constitutional responsibility under Section 54 of the 2013 Constitution.

Section 54(2) requires the EC to review the composition of Parliament at least one year before a general election and, where necessary, adjust the number of Members of Parliament to ensure that the ratio of MPs to the population remains as consistent as practicable with that of the first general election held under the Constitution.

EC Chairperson Justice Usaia Ratuvili said the Commission undertook its review using calculations based on two official data sources: census-based population figures and data from the National Register of Voters.

According to Justice Ratuvili, the two sets of calculations produced different outcomes.

Census-based data indicated that a reduction in the number of parliamentary seats was warranted, while voter registration-based data suggested an increase in seats.

“After considering both official data sources, the EC noted that the census-based calculations would result in a reduction of seats, while the voter registration-based calculations would result in an increase in seats,” Justice Ratuvili said.

He explained that, after carefully weighing these contrasting results, the Commission concluded that retaining the current number of seats best aligns with both the letter and the intent of Section 54(2) of the Constitution.

“In view of this, the EC has resolved that there will be no alteration to the number of seats in Parliament, which will remain at 55 seats for the next General Election,” Justice Ratuvili said.

The decision brings certainty to the parliamentary framework ahead of the upcoming election and confirms that voters will elect the same number of Members of Parliament as in the previous general election.
