Fiji is taking part in an international conference examining how peacekeeping operations can evolve to better respond to future challenges and strengthen the protection of civilians.

The Future of Peacekeeping Conference is being facilitated by the Stimson Center in partnership with Fiji’s Ministry of Defence and Veterans Affairs, with support from the Australian Department of Defence and Global Affairs Canada.

The event has brought together government representatives from across the region, United Nations officials, regional organisations, peacekeeping training institutions and researchers to share experiences and discuss the future direction of peace operations.

The Fiji Police Force, Republic of the Fiji Military Forces and Fiji Corrections Service are represented at the conference.

Fiji Police Force officers are also contributing to discussions as panellists during several sessions.

The opening two days of the conference examined experiences from the Indo-Pacific region and lessons that could help shape future United Nations and regional peacekeeping missions.

Participants have also explored the challenges limiting women’s involvement in peacekeeping, along with the need to strengthen gender-responsive approaches in future peace operations.

The conference provides an opportunity for Fiji and other regional stakeholders to contribute their experiences while considering how peacekeeping missions can become more effective and responsive to the needs of communities affected by conflict.
