The largest “wave” of Team Fiji athletes and officials for the 2026 Commonwealth Games departed Nadi on Sunday morning for the long two-day journey to Glasgow.

The 29-member group included Chef de Mission Ajay Ballu, Team Manager Jane Wong-Niubalau, the basketball, bowls and swimming teams, as well as Dr Wong and two physiotherapists from the medical team.

The team travelled via Melbourne and Dubai, where swimmer Anahira McCutcheon joined the group. Fellow swimmer Tolu Young met up with the team in Glasgow after completing a four-day training camp in Europe, en route from his college in the United States.

Team Fiji’s Jane Wong-Niubalau confirmed the team’s arrival in Glasgow on Monday night, Scotland time.

The majority of the team is accommodated in one Games Village, while the swimming team is based at another location closer to its competition venue.

The weightlifting team departed Nadi on Tuesday morning, while the remaining athletics team and another physiotherapist are scheduled to leave on Wednesday morning.

The athletics group will travel via Melbourne, where Yeshnil Karan and Rusiate Matai will join the team.

Both athletes have been training in Brisbane and Melbourne over the past few weeks as part of their final preparations.

Judoka Gerard Takayawa, who is based in Japan, will fly to Manchester on July 23 for a live-in training camp with UK-based coach Mike Liptrot before joining Team Fiji in Glasgow on July 29.

The boxing team has completed a 10-day training camp in Ireland with coach Cam Todd and met up with the main team in Glasgow on Monday.

Para-athlete Sitiveni Konataci and SNC coach Fesaitu Mario, who have been based in the UK and Scotland attending a GAPS Camp, will meet up with the main athletics team in Glasgow on Thursday.

Team Fiji’s travel arrangements have been staggered, as athletes and officials are only permitted to check into the Games Villages four days before their respective competitions.
