Residents and road users in Suva are set to benefit from major upgrades aimed at improving safety, easing traffic congestion and strengthening connections across key areas of the city.

Two projects, the Ratu Sukuna Road Upgrading Project and the Extension Street Road Link to Brown Street Project, were officially launched today as part of the Government’s broader investment in Fiji’s transport infrastructure.

The 2.7-kilometre Ratu Sukuna Road upgrade will include pavement rehabilitation, improved drainage systems, new kerbs and channels, continuous dual pedestrian footpaths, safer pedestrian crossings, upgraded road signs and enhanced traffic management.

For people travelling around the Colonial War Memorial Hospital, the Extension Street link to Brown Street is expected to provide better connectivity and help reduce congestion.

The new link will also improve access for emergency services, patients, hospital workers and motorists.

Speaking at the launch in Suva, Minister for Public Works, Meteorological Services and Transport, Ro Filipe Tuisawau, said the projects represent long-term investments in Fiji’s infrastructure, with the potential to support economic activity, improve public safety and contribute to community wellbeing.

The Minister also acknowledged the work of the Fiji Roads Authority, development partners, engineers, contractors and other stakeholders involved in the projects.

He called for greater use of local businesses and workers to ensure the developments create wider economic opportunities for Fijians.

The launch also coincided with announcements of several other major road, bridge and jetty projects, signalling continued efforts to improve Fiji’s transport network.
