Communities across Fiji are receiving greater protection from flooding and riverbank erosion following the completion of nine waterway and drainage projects worth more than $2.5 million.

The projects were carried out under the Ministry of Agriculture, Waterways and Sugar Industry’s 2025/2026 Waterways Capital Works Programme, with riverbank protection works completed in Lautoka, Kadavu, Namosi, Naitasiri, Tailevu and Cakaudrove.

More than 1,600 villagers are expected to benefit from the completed works, which are designed to reduce the impact of flooding and erosion on communities.

The investment is also aimed at safeguarding homes, public infrastructure and livelihoods, while strengthening the ability of vulnerable communities to withstand the growing effects of climate change.

The projects form part of ongoing efforts to improve waterway management and build greater resilience across Fiji.
