Team Fiji has officially joined the Commonwealth family in Glasgow as the 23rd Commonwealth Games were declared open by King Charles III.

A 58-member Fijian contingent competing across eight sports will proudly represent the nation, aiming to make a strong start and add to Fiji’s proud Commonwealth Games legacy.

The opening ceremony marked the beginning of 10 days of competition, bringing together athletes from across the Commonwealth.

In his opening address, King Charles praised the commitment and resilience of athletes, describing the Commonwealth as a unique family of nations united through sport.

“As we gather, we celebrate the dedication and talent of every athlete and team. Your perseverance inspires us (0:59) and we eagerly anticipate your achievements in the coming days.”

He also highlighted the successful completion of the 500-day King’s Baton Relay, which travelled across Commonwealth nations before arriving in Scotland.

“Over the past 500 days, the baton relay has been welcomed by communities with generosity and pride. Seeing the batons arrive into Scotland today, in all their colorful glory, carried by inspiring athletes and para-athletes, reminds us once again that the Commonwealth is a unique and extraordinary family of nations.”

The King used the occasion to encourage global action against plastic pollution, stressing the importance of protecting oceans and marine ecosystems for future generations.

“For these games, the relay has carried another message to help remove the plastic pollution that harms our oceans and waterways and can impact on human health. Addressing plastic pollution complements the immense global efforts required to protect 30% of the world’s ocean by 2030. Caring for the ocean’s natural capital ensures our communities and businesses can continue to thrive and vital global food resources can be enhanced.”

Meanwhile, Team Fiji’s campaign begins tomorrow, with athletes set to compete across swimming, boxing and 3×3 basketball as they chase a strong start to their Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games campaign.
