Fiji’s first boxing representative at the Commonwealth Games, Ben Maukakala, has bowed out of the competition after a second-round referee stoppage loss to New Zealand’s Connor Campbell.

Competing in his Commonwealth Games debut, the 20-year-old Fijian showed confidence and composure in a closely contested opening round against his experienced Oceania rival.

Despite Maukakala’s strong start, Campbell was able to land more scoring punches to edge the first round.

The second round saw the New Zealander increase the pressure, connecting with several powerful combinations that resulted in three standing eight-counts. The referee subsequently stopped the contest, ending Maukakala’s Commonwealth Games campaign.

While disappointed with the result, Fiji national boxing coach Cameron Todd praised the young boxer’s performance and highlighted the significant progress he has made in a short period of time.

Todd said Maukakala demonstrated tremendous potential on one of the sport’s biggest stages and will benefit greatly from the experience gained at the Games.

At just 20 years old, Maukakala is regarded as one of Fiji Amateur Boxing’s most promising prospects, with the coaching staff confident he has a bright future ahead.

With Maukakala’s competition now complete, Team Fiji’s boxing focus shifts to Pacific Games gold medalist Jone Davule.

Davule will compete in the 60kg division scheduled for 5am Fiji time on Sunday.

The Fiji camp is now rallying behind Davule as he looks to continue the nation’s medal hopes at the Commonwealth Games.
