Fijian boxer Jasmine Daunakamakama is one victory away from a shot at Commonwealth Games gold after securing a place in the women’s 57kg semi-finals.

Daunakamakama defeated Sri Lanka’s Keshani Hansika 4-1 on the judges’ scorecards in her quarter-final bout, guaranteeing herself at least a bronze medal and becoming the first Fijian woman boxer to reach this stage of the competition.

An emotional Daunakamakama reflected on the significance of the achievement, saying the dream she has pursued since childhood is finally within reach.

“Each step that I take, my dream becomes more real. It’s quite overwhelming,” she said.

“I’ve dreamt about this since I was 10. I think my younger self would be so proud of the person I’ve become today.”

The 26-year-old also thanked the people who have supported her throughout her boxing journey.

“It wouldn’t be possible without my loved ones, my boxing family, my family, my friends all around the Pacific and all around the world. Thank you so much for all the love.”

With history already made, Daunakamakama now turns her focus to the semi-final showdown against Walsh as she aims to become the first Fijian woman boxer to reach a Commonwealth Games gold medal bout.
