Quade Cooper’s hopes of making a remarkable return to the Wallabies for the 2027 Rugby World Cup remain alive, despite the veteran flyhalf currently having no playing contract for next season.

The 38-year-old has re-entered the Australian rugby conversation after joining the Wallabies’ camp in Japan and sharing his experience of Japanese rugby ahead of Saturday’s Test against Japan.

Cooper, who has won 80 Tests for Australia, moved into a coaching role with Osaka-based Kintetsu Liners last season. His shift away from playing led many to believe his international career was over, but Cooper has since made it clear that he never formally retired.

His potential comeback adds another experienced name to a group of veteran Australian playmakers looking to keep their World Cup ambitions alive. Bernard Foley is set to return to the NSW Waratahs next season, while James O’Connor has been linked with a move back to the Western Force.

For now, Australia’s No.10 jersey belongs to Declan Meredith, who will start against Japan on Saturday, with Ben Donaldson providing cover from the bench. Carter Gordon has been left out after recently returning from a leg injury, while Queensland Reds youngster Tom Lynagh is also working his way back to full fitness.

New Wallabies coach Les Kiss has indicated he does not want to make major changes to his halves combination, but he has stopped short of guaranteeing any player a place in his long-term plans.

That leaves Cooper facing a significant hurdle: he does not currently have a playing deal for the 2026-27 season.

Even so, Wallabies captain Harry Wilson believes the veteran cannot be dismissed when it comes to Australia’s plans for the 2027 World Cup on home soil.

Cooper’s return may appear unlikely, but with the tournament now firmly on the horizon, Australia’s flyhalf race could still have another twist.
