The Reserve Bank of Fiji has announced that the old design flora and fauna banknotes will be officially demonetised from 1st January 2027, meaning businesses will no longer be required to accept them as payment after 31st December 2026.

The RBF said the decision follows the introduction of the new polymer banknotes into circulation on 2 January 2026, with the demonetisation now gazetted to take effect from the start of next year.

RBF Governor Ariff Ali said that as of 31 July 2026, 72.3 per cent of the old banknotes in circulation had been recalled, and thanked the public for supporting the smooth transition to the new polymer notes.

Ali said the recall of old banknotes is a key process for central banks to reduce public confusion, maintain the quality of currency in circulation and help prevent counterfeiting.

The Reserve Bank is urging members of the public to exchange any remaining old banknotes before the end of the year.

After 31st December 2026, only the Reserve Bank of Fiji will provide value for the old flora and fauna banknotes.
