The proposed Pasifika Communities University (PCU) is moving closer to the next stage of its establishment, with authorities continuing to examine the legislation needed to support the institution.

Representatives from PCU, the Higher Education Commission Fiji and the Ministry of Education recently met to assess progress on the PCU Bill, including proposed changes and the parliamentary procedures that must be followed before the legislation can advance.

Education Minister Aseri Radrodro was briefed during the discussions, which brought together PCU Pro-Chancellor Dr Akanisi Kedrayate, Higher Education Commission Fiji Director Dr Eci Naisele, Legal Officer Neha Prasad, the Permanent Secretary for Education and senior Ministry officials.

A key part of the review is ensuring that the proposed legislation is consistent with Fiji’s Constitution, existing laws, governance requirements and standards governing higher education.

The institutions are also examining whether the Bill satisfies the quality assurance requirements of the Higher Education Commission Fiji.

Minister Radrodro acknowledged the work completed so far and stressed the need for the Bill to follow the appropriate legal, approval and parliamentary processes before it can proceed.

The review forms part of wider efforts to strengthen Fiji’s tertiary education system, with the proposed university expected to contribute to quality and sustainable higher education opportunities for Fiji and the broader Pacific region.
