Cabinet has endorsed proposed amendments to the Electoral Act 2014 aimed at making electoral participation in Fiji more inclusive, accessible and transparent.
The proposed changes seek to remove unnecessary requirements that may prevent eligible voters from participating in elections, while expanding eligibility for postal voting and improving accessibility for persons with disabilities.
The amendments will also strengthen electoral quality assurance and provide greater clarity around electoral processes.
Other proposed changes include measures to support a more level playing field for political parties and clearer rules governing referendum campaigning.
A revised ballot paper format is also proposed to make it easier for voters to identify candidates and political parties when casting their votes.
The amendments form part of efforts to strengthen Fiji’s electoral framework and ensure electoral processes remain accessible and clear for voters.
