Cabinet has endorsed recommendations from a review of market by-laws under the Local Government Act 1972, setting the stage for new regulations governing market operations.

The proposed Local Government (Municipal Market) Regulations will introduce standardised rules for municipal, mini and satellite markets across the country.

The new framework is aimed at improving protection for vendors and consumers while strengthening health, food safety, environmental management, transparency and accountability.

Market practices would also become more transparent, with vendors required to display prices in writing. The regulations are also expected to provide clearer operating arrangements, improve dispute resolution and simplify the collection of market fees and revenue.

The proposed rules would prohibit the sale of certain meat and fish products, mixed kava and wholesale activities within markets.

Cooked food vendors would also have to meet the required food safety and health standards.
