Students at 12 schools in the Central Division could soon begin learning Chinese under a proposed language programme being considered for Fiji’s education system.

The pilot would involve six primary and six secondary schools, giving students an opportunity to learn the Chinese language and gain a better understanding of its culture.

Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro discussed the proposal with the Director of the Chinese Language Education Centre and representatives of the Chinese Embassy.

The discussions focused on developing appropriate teaching materials, training local teachers and creating opportunities for students to access scholarships and other Chinese language programmes.

Chinese Embassy representatives have indicated their willingness to assist with teacher training, learning resources and other areas of support.

The programme is expected to give students an additional language option while strengthening cultural understanding and education links between Fiji and China.
