Fiji’s Constitution Review Commission Report is now before Parliament, opening the next stage of the country’s constitutional review process.

The report, tabled in Parliament today by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, contains the Commission’s findings and recommendations following consultations across the country and submissions from members of the public, faith-based organisations, civil society, Government ministries and other stakeholders.

But the tabling of the report does not mean the recommendations have been accepted or adopted by Government.

Cabinet will now consider the recommendations and determine the appropriate next steps, with any proposed changes to go through the required constitutional and parliamentary processes.

Speaker of Parliament Filimone Jitoko says the report must now be made available to the public, allowing Fijians to examine what has been proposed.

The tabling marks the completion of the Commission’s role in presenting its findings and recommendations.

The focus now shifts to Government’s consideration of the report, and what, if any, constitutional changes will eventually be taken forward.
