Parliament has passed the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Bill 2025, paving the way for stronger recognition and protection of indigenous identity, cultural heritage and customary practices in Fiji.

During the Bill’s Third Reading, Minister for iTaukei Affairs Ifereimi Vasu said the legislation would provide a framework to address discrimination and safeguard traditional knowledge and cultural heritage.

The Bill provides for the development of a National Action Plan, which will focus on promoting indigenous rights, ensuring fair participation in benefits from natural resources and reviewing existing laws that affect indigenous interests.

The plan will also introduce stronger accountability measures through reporting to Parliament.

Mr Vasu confirmed that its development would involve consultations with the Bose Levu Vakaturaga, iTaukei Affairs Board, indigenous communities and other stakeholders.

Women, young people and persons with disabilities will also be included in the consultation process.

He stressed that public engagement must be meaningful and not simply a formality.

Mr Vasu said the true impact of the legislation would depend on how effectively the National Action Plan is developed, the level of consultation undertaken and whether indigenous communities experience tangible improvements in their lives.
