Fiji is taking another step towards improving maritime safety and ocean resource management, with the Fiji Hydrography Service (FHS) beginning hydrographic survey operations in the waters surrounding Malolo.

The operation, carried out by the service’s Dedicated Geo-Spatial Survey Team (DGST), will focus on gathering important underwater information to improve nautical chart accuracy and provide safer navigation for vessels travelling through Fiji’s waters.

The survey is expected to support several key maritime activities, including shipping, tourism, fisheries management and coastal development. The information collected will also help authorities make informed decisions about the protection and sustainable management of the country’s marine resources.

The initiative forms part of Fiji’s broader Maritime Security Strategy, which places emphasis on strengthening maritime awareness and safeguarding the nation’s ocean interests.

It also supports the goals of the National Development Plan 2025–2029 and Vision 2050, particularly in developing maritime infrastructure, improving connectivity and building economic resilience.

As a Large Ocean State, Fiji continues to recognise the importance of hydrography in advancing its Blue Economy ambitions. Accurate marine data is essential for safer sea travel, responsible ocean development and ensuring marine resources are protected for future generations.
