Fiji and Austria have held their first-ever Political Consultations, establishing a new platform to strengthen diplomatic relations and explore opportunities for closer cooperation.

The discussions focused on potential partnerships in trade, investment, climate resilience, innovation and sustainable development.

The meeting was co-chaired by Fiji’s Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs and External Trade, Ambassador Solo Mara, and Austria’s Vice-Minister for European and International Affairs (Political Affairs), Ambassador Dr. Hannah Liko.

The consultations took place at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and External Trade headquarters in Suva this week, in collaboration with Austria’s Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs and the Austrian Embassy in Canberra.

Ambassador Mara welcomed the establishment of the annual dialogue, saying it would build on existing relations and create opportunities for further cooperation. He stressed that any joint initiatives should support Fiji’s national development priorities and regional goals.

Ambassador Liko reaffirmed Austria’s commitment to strengthening its engagement with Fiji and the wider Pacific, highlighting its willingness to support Fiji’s development objectives.

The discussions also come as Fiji prepares to reopen its Embassy in Brussels. The mission is expected to strengthen Fiji’s diplomatic engagement with Austria, the European Union and other European partners, while creating further opportunities to advance the country’s economic and development interests.

During her visit, Ambassador Liko also met with Fiji’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade, Sakiasi Ditoka.

Both countries agreed to develop joint action plans in the coming months to turn the discussions into practical outcomes.
