A small aquaculture venture in Navuniyaumunu, Ra, is steadily transforming into a reliable source of income, as government-backed support helps local farmers expand production.
Through assistance from the Ministry of Fisheries, farmer Akata Navakaumi is now developing a second fish pond measuring 30 by 20 metres.
Her journey began under the Food Security Programme, which enabled her to establish the initial pond that now sustains regular harvests.
Currently, Ms. Navakaumi harvests fish three to four times annually, generating earnings ranging from $600 to $800 per cycle.
Her produce supplies households across communities along the Tokaimalo corridor, contributing to local food availability.
With the addition of the new pond, output is projected to almost double, opening the door to increased income and wider distribution.
The expansion also highlights broader efforts to strengthen rural livelihoods and build resilient, community-based economies across Fiji.
Authorities say initiatives like these remain central to empowering local entrepreneurs, improving productivity, and enhancing food security in rural areas.
