Despite a challenging start to the season, Crusaders coach Rob Penney remains steadfast in his belief that his team can defend their Super Rugby crown.

With the Crusaders currently at the bottom of the standings after five consecutive defeats, their worst start to a season, Penney acknowledges the tough road ahead as they prepare to face the second-placed Chiefs in Christchurch.

Penney reiterated that the team’s goal of winning the tournament has not wavered, emphasizing their competitiveness and ability to overcome any opponent on their day.

“Our goal posts haven’t moved,” Penney affirmed. “We feel as though we’re competitive with everybody and on our day we can beat anybody. Obviously, every week (so far) we’ve made it harder for ourselves, but we’ve just got to cement a place in the playoffs.”

Acknowledging the need for wins to secure a playoff berth, Penney emphasized the team’s focus on performance while remaining confident in their ability to turn their season around.

“We’ve talked a lot about performance, and that’s what we’re focused on, but we do need some outcomes obviously,” Penney remarked.

Despite the team’s recent struggles, Penney expressed confidence in their potential to produce winning performances and downplayed any additional pressure, stating, “I’m fine. Just coaching. Just trying to get the boys better and get the team functioning as well as we can.”

Looking ahead to their upcoming match against the Chiefs, Penney recognized the progress both teams have made since their season-opening encounter, acknowledging the Chiefs’ confidence and the challenge they pose.

“It’s a real challenge for us,” Penney admitted. “The Chiefs have progressed, they’re a team brimming with confidence, and we’ve probably gone the other way.”

As the Crusaders seek to reverse their fortunes, Penney remains optimistic about their ability to rise to the challenge and reclaim their status as a Super Rugby force to be reckoned with.
