Fiji is positioning itself for a major leap in sugar production, with the government exploring opportunities to build a new state-of-the-art sugar mill.
Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs and Sugar Industry, Charan Jeath Singh, used his attendance at the Centennial Congress of the International Society of Sugar Cane Technologists (ISSCT) in Cali to hold talks with some of the world’s leading sugar engineering firms.
Joined by Permanent Secretary Dr. Vinesh Kumar, the Minister met with representatives from Uttam Group (India), ULKA Industries, and Five Group; companies known for modernizing mills across Asia, Africa, and Latin America.
At the heart of discussions is Fiji’s plan to introduce energy-efficient technology designed to reduce production costs, increase sugar recovery, and diversify outputs into ethanol, electricity cogeneration, and bio-fertilizers.
“Our government is committed to revitalizing Fiji’s sugar industry. Establishing a new mill with the latest technology is a strategic step toward increasing efficiency, lowering costs, and ensuring sustainability,” Singh said. “These discussions with global leaders in mill construction are vital for us to make the right decision for Fiji’s future.”
The move forms part of Fiji’s Sugar Industry Modernization Program, which aims to restore confidence in the sector, create rural jobs, and strengthen the export economy by adopting global best practices.
