The Ministry of Health and Medical Services says Fiji remains at low risk as authorities continue tracking a Hantavirus outbreak connected to the Hondius cruise ship currently stationed near Tenerife in Spain’s Canary Islands.
Health officials confirmed that eight infections and three deaths have been reported overseas. However, no cases have been detected in Fiji and none of the affected passengers are Fijian nationals.
The Ministry, through the Fiji Centre for Disease Control, says strict screening and inspection procedures are still being enforced at all international entry points around the country. These include health declaration checks, vessel inspections and ongoing disease surveillance measures.
Hantavirus is an uncommon illness transmitted through contact with rodents, including rats and mice, or their droppings.
Symptoms can include fever, muscle pain, fatigue, headaches, nausea and breathing difficulties.
Members of the public are being urged to seek medical care if they experience symptoms after possible exposure to rodents or contaminated areas.
